What is Reiki?

Once I reveal to folks that I am a certified reiki practitioner, I'm always asked "what is reiki?" So, let's start with the basics. Reiki is a holistic healing practice. The term 'reiki' is Japanese and is pronounced 'ray-key.' Reiki is both a term and a practice. As a Japanese term, reiki means energy. As a practice, reiki is energy healing.

Now, you might be thinking to yourself: what does energy have to do with me?
Well, all people are made up of energy: stress, frustration, anxiety, physical pain, grief, sadness, happiness, joy, love -- these are all forms of energy that we hold within us and generate in our daily lives. Think about it, most of us, at one time or another, have said or thought "Wow, I get a really bad vibe from that person!" or "Gosh, I get really good vibes from that guy!" The vibes are energy; they're the things that make us, us, and they include both the good (love, happiness, joy, excitement, etc.) and the bad (stress, anxiety, grief, pain, etc.). These energies are commonly referred to as our chakras, and together through reiki healing a practitioner and client work to align those chakras.

That being said, even though energy can be both good and bad (or positive and negative) reiki healing is an inherently good and positive practice where light and love are harnessed by the practitioner (me) to help their client heal. It has been practiced for thousands of years and reiki can never do harm to the client or the practitioner.

Certainly, the next question you may be asking yourself is "okay, what the heck are you going to do to align my chakras?! What should I expect?"

Well, receiving reiki healing is a very calming and relaxing process. Clients lay on a comfy massage table, close their eyes, and listen to some calming music: there's no effort or stress involved on your part. As you lay, the practitioner will gently hover their hands over your energy points, or chakras. In that process, the practitioner is working to pull sluggish or blocked energies out, and realign the chakras so that they are clear. As you lay, you will enter a calmed, euphoric, meditative state. And upon completion of the session, clients are left feeling calmer, more refreshed, emboldened, and alive! Last, testimonials and studies have consistently revealed that those who undergo reiki healing report decreased anxiety, stress, depression, and physical pain.

Note: Reiki can be practiced on anyone of any age! However clients under 17 will need parental consent (completed form) before their session.
