Therapy for LGBTQ+ folks in Westchester County
Helping you initiate mental health treatment so you can feel relief and supported.
You've been struggling with your mental health and have wanted to get help, but you've been nervous to get started because providers might not understand your full experience or point of view. With therapy, we'll explore the depression, anxiety and/or stress you're experiencing within a safe, therapeutic environment so that you feel comfortable.
Hi there! I'm Shelby!
I'm a licensed creative arts therapist (LCAT) and I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ teens-adults. Through talk or art therapy, I'll help you cope with mental health issues, teach skills that you can utilize in everyday life, and process past trauma.
My Approaches
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Feminist Therapy, Trauma Informed

CBT is an evidenced-based, structured from of therapy that helps us focus on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It is goal-oriented and problem-focused while we learn healthy coping skills and challenge negative thoughts in order for us to feel better.

Feminist Therapy is a person-centered approach where the provider is aware of intersectionality and takes that into consideration when providing treatment and feedback. I'm aware of the language used during sessions and am also aware of and acknowledge how disability, socioeconomic backgrounds, race, class and gender can impact how one operates in the world. To offset the inequalities experienced by the LGBTQ+ community and make mental health care more accessible, I utilize a sliding scale for session rates as needed.

A trauma-informed approach is being aware of and acknowledging trauma that one has experienced and how it goes on to affect mental health, behavior and ability to engage in treatment.

These ideologies and approaches are applied to the talk and art therapy I provide.

Talk Therapy

Talk therapy is a discussion based treatment with a licensed provider. During a session we check-in, talk about what has brought you to therapy, recognize thought/behavior patterns and how to change them to be more healthy. Once we've talked for about 50 minutes, discussion wraps up and we schedule another session.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is an experiential based treatment that utilizes art to explore what brings you to therapy. Sessions are facilitated by a licensed art therapist. Similar to talk therapy sessions, we would start by verbally checking in, then I would introduce a prompt or art therapy directive for you to completed. After, we would discuss the process of making the art and verbally explore themes/issues that were realized while creating. Then, we wrap up and schedule another session.

FAQs

What are your rates?
My standard rate is $175/session. However, I offer a sliding scale rate as needed. If you would like to utilize the sliding scale, we can determine a rate that would be fair to both of us.

How long are sessions?
I block out 60 minutes for each session. We'll spend about 50-55 minutes on treatment and the last 5-10 minutes will be spent wrapping up and scheduling another session.

Do you accept insurance?
Unfortunately, I don't accept insurance. I offer a sliding scale for clients, as needed, in order to offset the out-of-pocket cost. Depending on the out-of-network coverage with your insurance, you may be able to be partially or completely reimbursed. If you're able to get reimbursed, at the end of the month, I would provide you with a monthly superbill (invoice) for you to submit to your insurance company. Then you would receive a check from them directly.

Do you offer telehealth or in-person sessions?
I offer both! I like to 'go with the flow' and respect your needs as a client. I have clients who prefer strictly in-person sessions. Due to convenience, others prefer telehealth and some utilize both, based on their availability.
*The only thing I would be aware of is that conducting art therapy via telehealth is a bit difficult. But, I've found a way to navigate this. I would give you an art therapy directive to complete prior to the session, you would send me an image of what you created, then we would spend our session speaking about what you made and process thoughts and emotions that come along with it.

Do I need to commit to talk or art therapy as a treatment approach?
My short answer is, no. Long answer is that I offer my clients whatever they need. The cost per session is identical, so that you can choose which service to utilize. We can do exclusively talk therapy, art therapy or a mix of both!

Please reach out to me if you have any other questions that I haven't answered :)
